The 10-part, 19-hour film begins with the music's roots in post-Civil War New Orleans and concludes roughly a century later. User Reviews: Ken Burns' Jazz (2000)

  • Overall:

Great Documentary, but Sucks at the End.

    By Greg  Jul 2, 2002

I loved the series about Jazz but I was turned off by the snobbery of both Wynton Marsalis and Stanley Crouch. I felt that the series had a biased view of contemporary jazz and I love contemporary jazz.Whether you are a hip hop fan or not, you have t...o give it credit for help keeping the music alive. Rappers like Guru, Tribe Called Quest and Digable Planets have used jazz beats or collaborated with jazz artists. Even singers like Sade and Jill Scott use jazz as well but in a modern setting. Burns should have used real jazz experts and historians who have been there as opposed to Marsalis and Crouch because they are very biased in their view. Great series, but it falls flat in the end.
