For a romantic comedy, this film was a bit long for me. Stiller takes too long to come to his senses and the payoff doesn't warrent the delay. It's cute, but not great.
This film touches all the right areas for a feel good film. Keeping the Faith has potential to be crude and sacreligious, but Edward Norton really showed some class making this film. Norton is sophisticated in front of and behind the camera. Stiller is hilarious as usual. Jenna Elfman is an incredible actress who restrains herself a bit for this role, and does it with grace, and she's purdy too. It isn't the funniest movie I have ever seen but it is a great movie.
Some films are not worth seeing once. Others, notably in the minority, might be worthy of engaging us again... but not until months or years later. Fewer still are those rare flicks with substance and style that merit an attentive study of the credits, followed by an immediate rewind and replay from beginning to end. "Keeping The Faith" is one of those. Not because of whatever (to us somewhat simplistically shallow) religious overtones it carried, or its rampant (yes, fluffy) romanticism, but purely for the raw and often seemingly candid portrayals of a complicated panorama of human foibles that we all fall victim to yet rarely are able to witness so clearly in others. Brian George's portrayal of the Indian barkeep is priceless, as is the proverb he utters so eloquently. Milos Forman's wholly believable characterization of the aging monsignor, a priest for 40 years yet having a history of falling in love at least once a decade, is almost too real; one almost feels genuine embarrassment at being a fly on the wall, hearing his plaintive confession to the young protege he had taught in seminary. And these examples are peripheral to those perhaps more central to the plot (which will be left to you to catch on your own). Enjoy. We did. Very much.
I have seen this movie 3 times... I love it. I love Edward as an actor because he is so dynamic and is able to portray every part he takes so well. I think its amazing that he directd, starred in and helped produce this movie. "Keeping the Faith" is funny and clever with its language.
ed,
the best things in life are free and so
easy to express if respected. i heard that you got the
story from an old friend in college. i'm sure putting
the whole experience of an individual into a movie
wasn't easy but worth your while because you produced a
movie you felt real about as a person, not an actor. it
hit home and is the best movie i've seen since the
80's. thanks for being real and funny while you're
filling your wallet with a movie that could've been a
flop... but it's not all about money... thank god there's
an actor that's willing to be human... you're
lucky....
