    Stevie's Second Soundtrack

    By Andre'  Feb 16, 2006

Pros: Diversely Moody And Well Crafted

Cons: A little Dated In Parts Of The Production

'Jungle Fever' is Stevie Wonder's soundtrack to a rather controversial Spike Lee film in 1990.This was also Wonder's big chance to make a comeback and the uptempo groove of the title song gave him just that.Stevie Wonder was,is and wi...ll always be a distinctive melodicist and this album is no exception. However most of the music of 1990 in particular has a pasty, drum machine led 'new jack' hip-hop production in R&B and (again) to that this album is no exception. But again Stevie Wonder's melodic and wordly gifts again save the day as "Queen In The Black" and the title track feature some of the best wordly (and arrangements of his career),even if they could use a remix.Three of the best songs are "Make Sure Your Sure",a jazz styled song that more closely reflects his recent work.Another ballad of note is the touching "These Three Words"-the video clip is very sad so don't watch it alone.Of the uptempo tunes is the topical "Chemical Love" which is only production here that isn't incredibly dated sounding.None of this matters of course since (as with all of Wonder's material) the quality of the writing (and of course the melody) is so incredibly high. An Overlooked Gem...

    By scott_724_98  Sep 7, 2001

For my tastes, the mighty Wonder machine relied a little too much on technology during the eighties. Gone was the rich, organic sound of "Innervisions" and "Songs in the Key of Life" and in it's place was the cold synthesizer based sound that defined... the era. Of course, groups like Depeche Mode weren't nearly the songwriters Wonder was, so there was some consulation available to long time fans. "Jungle Love" arrived just as Wonder was beginning to get the muse back. Inspired by Spike Lee's film about interracial love, Wonder wrote some of his most joyous - and bracing music - in years. Those looking for more fluff like "I Just Called..." are advised to look elsewhere. Yeah - there's lovely ballads here like "These Three Words" - but they are remiscent of classic Wonder era gems as "Sunshine of my Life" and "Superwoman". As for some ass-liberating funk, try the title cut and "Fun Day", proving that Wonder has not lost his mojo. His backbone is as evident as ever, as Wonder hardly shies away from the topic at hand with numbers like "Queen In the Black" and "Each Other's Throat". For those who thought Wonder had softened since the glory days of the mid-seventies, "Jungle Fever" will prove to be a stirring return to form from one of music's greatest visionaries. Pro Reviews: Jungle Fever

Despite all of the hype surrounding it, the soundtrack to Jungle Fever is Stevie Wonder's best work in years. Although it can't compare to Wonder's glory days, Jungle Fever is a considerable improvement from his bland late-'80s albums. Wonder still borders on saccharine on his ballads, although even the sappiest of them ("These Three Words") is never as sickening as "I Just Called to Say I Love You." While the keyboard funk of "Chemical Love," "Gotta Have You" and "Queen in the Black" doesn't sound new, it does sound alive, which is better than Wonder has sounded in years.
