    The Tree Stands Strong

By Eric Halcon  Mar 23, 2007

Pros: Withstands the test of timelessness

    Cons: Technically none

In 1987, the music scene is dominated by homogeneous sounding pop ditties. Think of Rick Astley, Bananarama, Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, and The Bangles. Sure, they did make the said year like a walk in the park, all fluffy and sunny. Then, U2 ...released "The Joshua Tree", a record that redefined the musical landscape dominated by radio-friendly hits. Released in March of the said year, it took less than a month for the record to rocket up to the zenith of the Billboard 200 charts. U2 courageously took serious matters into the record such as self-discovery and substance addiction, which are evident in the popular anthems, "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" and "Running To Stand Still". This album even chalked up the #1 hit single, "With or Without You". U2's Bono, at the time of the release of the album, once said that "America's the promised land to a lot of Irish people". With "The Joshua Tree", it is one unadulterated sign, that he and his boys have arrived. They took along with them a strong wind of change. Read more Less

  • All Music Guide

Using the textured sonics of The Unforgettable Fire as a basis, U2 expanded those innovations by scaling back the songs to a personal setting and adding a grittier attack for its follow-up, The Joshua Tree. It's a move that returns them to the sweeping, anthemic rock of War, but if War was an exploding political bomb, The Joshua Tree is a journey through its aftermath, trying to find sense and hope in the desperation. That means that even the anthems -- the epic opener "Where the Streets Have No Name," the yearning "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" -- have seeds of doubt within their soaring choruses, and those fears take root throughout the album, whether it's in the mournful sliding acoustic guitars of "Running to Stand Still," the surging "One Tree Hill" or the hypnotic elegy "Mothers of the Disappeared." So it might seem a little ironic that U2 became superstars on the back of such a dark record, but their focus has never been clearer, nor has their music been catchier, ...than on The Joshua Tree. Unexpectedly, U2 have also tempered their textural post-punk with American influences. Not only are Bono's lyrics obsessed with America, but country and blues influences are heard throughout the record, and instead of using these as roots, they're used as ways to add texture to the music. With the uniformly excellent songs -- only the clumsy, heavy rock and portentous lyrics of "Bullet the Blue Sky" fall flat -- the result is a powerful, uncompromising record that became a hit due to its vision and its melody. Never before have their big messages sounded so direct and personal. - Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide Read more Less

Biography

U2

Through a combination of zealous righteousness and postpunk experimentalism, U2 became one of the most popular rock roll bands of the '80s. They were rock roll crusaders during an era of synthesized pop and heavy metal, equally known for their sweeping sound as for their grandiose statements about politics and religion. The Edge provided the group with a signature sou... Read more
