Johnnie Wilder was riding high as lead singer of Heatwave when he suffered a tragic auto accident in 1979. It left him paralyzed from the neck down and unable to continue with Heatwave. The interracial group had been formed in Germany by Wilder and his brother Keith. Wilder, who also sang with club bands and the group Nobleman, served in Germany during his army days and returned there after a brief visit home in 1972.
