In service to the Kytson family from 1598 until 1628 when Lady Kytson died, and continuing service with the daughter of Lady Kytson in Colchester, Wilbye became one of the first English madrigalists. These compositions, which appeared in two volumes from 1598 and 1609, number approximately sixty, scored for three to six voices.
