John Field
An Irish pianist and composer of delicate and expressive piano pieces. Field was the inventor of the nocturne, a new concept in romantic music and a precursor to Chopin's work in that form (Chopin taught his pupils Field's work). Field, the proverbially incurable romantic, was on the move all his life -- from Ireland to Paris to Vienna to St. Petersburg to Moscow. His lovely piano concertos have the grace and subtle line of his nocturnes. Many of his other piano works remain unplayed.
