Educated at Newington College (Australia) and Winchester College (England), Australian-born film director John Villiers Farrow went on to attend the Royal Naval Academy, earning a lifelong officer's commission. Launching his writing career during his first four years in uniform, Farrow began writing plays in the mid-1920s; the most famous of these, A Registered Woman, was filmed in 1931 as A Woman of Experience.
