Synopsis: Jefferson in Paris (1995)
Synopis: From Merchant Ivory Productions, director James Ivory brings to the screen the story of statesman and Declaration of Independence author Thomas Jefferson (Nick Nolte). The film takes place during the five years Jefferson lived in pre-revolutionary Paris, serving as the American ambassador to France prior to the fall of the Bastille in 1789. JEFFERSON IN PARIS focuses, however, on the personal side of his time there. A widower, he meets beautiful Anglo-Italian artist Maria Cosway (Greta Scacchi), whom he starts to court. When his slave's sister, Sally Hemings (Thandie Newton), joins the family in Paris, Jefferson also begins a relationship with her that would last for many years and would produce, arguably, many children. This passionate affair with his African-descended slave has been the subject of many historical debates and is thought-provokingly rendered in this period drama. Gwyneth Paltrow also stars as Jefferson's daughter, Patsy.Features: Jefferson in Paris (1995)

Nolte is brilliant as Jefferson the man, not the god that we have come to think of him from our history books. I grew up believing that Jefferson was a modern man in an 18th century life. Years of study and reading have led me to an opposite conclusion, that he was more likely a 17th century idealist catapulted into the 18th century. Nolte breathes life into the man. Before seeing the film I couldn't imagine Nolte portraying Jefferson, but now believe that no one else could ever capture him as well.
All the members of the cast are wonderful as well, especially Paltrow, Newton, and Scacchi. James Ivory's direction takes its time in depicting this piece of history, and I enjoyed the meticulous attention to detail.
The film was controversial when it was released since it depicted a romantic affair between Jefferson and Sally Hemmings, his young slave and property. At the time, most historians refused to believe that the Hemmings family was descended from Jefferson. Recent DNA tests have generally proven that Jefferson did father at least one of Sally Hemmings children, and most now admit that he probably fathered all of them.
