Singer, songwriter, song collector, dulcimer player, and author. Jean Ritchie, who was born in the heart of the Cumberland Mountains of Kentucky, was raised in the folk music of that area. She has been active in preserving and performing traditional mountain ballads and songs. She eventually moved to the New York City area and achieved a national reputation throughout the '50s and '60 singing solo voice, or with the mountain dulcimer. A number of Ritchie albums are still available from Smithsonian/Folkways recordings.
