Jason Birchmeier grew up in rural Michigan and later moved to Ann Arbor, where he studied at the University of Michigan and worked for All Music Guide. A child of the '80s, he grew up watching hours upon hours of MTV and took an early interest in music, particularly heavy metal and rap. As a teen, he occupied himself with the early-'90s alternative rock scene before he moved to Ann Arbor, where he discovered the richness of Detroit's nearby musical tradition. As the result of countless wild weekend excursions to tha D, his musical interests shifted toward soul and techno. More than anything, however, his experiences working at AMG broadened his horizons in later years, reviving his interest in the rhetorical dimensions of rap and furthering his interest in the seemingly endless depths of the greater pop/rock canon.
