    A One CD Wonder

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Nov 26, 2006

Pros: Toe tapping catchy songs, well produced, Debbie Diamond's voice

    Cons: Some missing direction

I bought this CD back in 2000 when it came out and I wish I had reviewed it at that time because perhaps more Yahoo users might have been convinced to buy it. This is a real fun CD with immediately likeable pop songs. The production values are pretty... good. This really should have had some bigger hits. I think "Juliette," "All Systems a Go-Go," and "Black Transmission" could have been Top 40 hits even in a world inundated by hip hop. But that could be the drawback of an Independent small label. The distribution isn't as wide. The look is very swinging 60's. You know, think---Bridget Bardot, mini skirts, and Austin Powers and Debbie Diamond's voice really fits the profile of the atmosphere they were trying to convey. The songs have singalong melodies and for the most part are upbeat. When it's swinging...it's really swinging. The slower ones are bit more haunting and a little weaker I think. However, I listened to this CD non-stop when it first came out and I've been waiting for a new one ever since. But it is apparently not to be. Read more Less

The Januaries the album is really worth a listen. It's unique and fun and you'll have the words in your head all day! Some of my personal favorite songs are Black Transmission and Angel Eye. I personally loved the Album and I hope you do too.

Sleek, sensual, and retro-futuristic, the Januaries' self-titled debut fuses smooth, Bacharach-inspired pop, '60s rock, and slinky trip-hop elements into a surprising and distinctive collection of songs. Though singer/guitarist Debbie Diamond's throaty vocals sound equally good on strutting rockers like "Black Transmission" and "Summer of Love" as well as seductive numbers such as "Love Met the Devil" and "Chocolate and Strawberries," it's the Januaries' fragile, striking ballads that make the album so refreshing; "The Girl's Insane" and "Jon Sings" have a certain bittersweet panache that recalls the best '60s pop laments. Similarly, the Blondie-esque "Angel Eye" and Sandie Shaw-like "Love Has Flown" reaffirm that the Januaries can borrow from tradition without being a slave to it. Stylish yet irony-free, The Januaries is an impressive and worthwhile debut.
