A fine tenor saxophonist with an appealing tone and a bop-ish style, James Clay was an early associate of Ornette Coleman's back in Texas in the 1950s. He came up North, made a few records (including a 1956 date with Lawrence Marable and two Riverside albums in 1960 as a leader), and then went back to Texas. Nearly three decades later, he appeared on Don Cherry's Art Deco album, playing in a style unchanged from the past and just as strong. James Clay recorded a pair of excellent straight-ahead...
