Great entry level HDRadio for car

By Chris  Mar 18, 2007 | 3 out of 3 found this JVC KD-HDR1 review helpful

Pros: multicast HD2 and HD3 FM; MP3 CD,

Cons: Many wires to install; remote is a waste.

I bought the HDRadio and was impressed with the ease of use. I did a self install and found that there were two hot wires, and multiple wires for four speakers. Once I over came this, easy to set up. HDRadio on AM is better than expected. HDRadio m...ulticast is better near the transmitter. I live 30 miles out and cannot listen to HD2 and HD3 stations while driving. CDROM is audio, MP3, WMA, compatible. The remote is a waste, in fact I have lost it and .... don't miss it. If you can find this for about $160, worth it. Don't pay for retail for the JVC. Read more Less

The Price is Right for this HD Unit!

By Charles  Jun 9, 2007 | 2 out of 2 found this JVC KD-HDR1 review helpful

Pros: Cost, HD Clarity, Surround Sound Feature

Cons: Difficult to fine tune (ie: Trebble, bass, mids)

The fact that JVC is putting out a CD deck that has a built-in tuner for less than $200 is incredible. As of today, it's the way to go to get a cost effective HD unit. I live in Galveston, TX (50 mi. south of Houston) and I get 33 HD stations, ...they are AWESOME! HD reception can go out in some spots, but overall so far the radio is great. The Surround sound feature they've built in is fantastic, it takes your 4 speakers and turns them into a smooth warm sounding masterpiece. The only catch is that it is hard to adjust the individual frequencies of treble, bass, and mids because you have to configure a user modified equalizer setting, there is no easy way to simply manipulate the settings. Overall, you can't complain because for $199.99 or less depending where you buy, you get an HD radio before all your buddies and the sound out of this unit is just fantastic. P.S. It has front, rear, and sub pre-outs, Sirius and XM ready (addl equip neccessary), it can also support and iPod adapter (addl equip neccessary) for direct iPod control. Read more Less

OK Radio - not for HD though...

By Ronald  Apr 4, 2007 | 1 out of 2 found this JVC KD-HDR1 review helpful

Pros: good sound, nice bass, selective eq settings

    Cons: complicated menus control

Bottom line - if you live in Long Island, do not buy this radio. I've had it in my truck for the past 6 months, and I cannot stand how many times the HD signal cuts out around my hometown of West Babylon. It sounds like you're listeni...ng to a terribly scratched CD as the music cuts out more than it comes in. I spoke with both JVC and Crutchfield, and neither had an explanation, only that my truck atenna (an 05 Dodge) is no good. Crutchfield actually told me that my stock tuner was probably a lot better than the tuner in the JVC radio. I like the radio, I just wish the HD signal would come in better. Read more Less

    Awesome Value

    By John  Jul 11, 2007

Pros: Features, Features, Features .... HD Radio, ipod support

Cons: None that I have found

I just replaced the receiver on my boat to get CD capabilities and I have to say that the sound quality, regular radio reception are really superb. Having HD radio support is an added benefit, but I have to say, FM in New Jersey is pretty darn good t...o begin with. I also added the ipod controlled unit, which not only allows ipod playback (not just RCA adapter) but actually allows for all ipod control and folder/title info to be displayed on the receiver screen. This means that I can stow away the ipod in a safe place and use all it's features in the faceplate (removable) or with the remote. I beg to differ with the other comment about the numerous wires. It came with just the basics - speakers, amp triggers and true, there were separate battery and ignition wires, but that is expected of better equipment. For those of you installing yourself and potentially stealing the existing harness from your present radio, I recommend a fantastic connector system called Posi-Products car stereo connector kit. These little twist on connectors make sure connections a no-brainer. Super product and great value. Read more Less
