This movie is a timeless classic with more comedy stars assmebled than ever will be again. I first saw this movie in 1963 with my father and never laughed harder (with the possible exception of Airplane). The one image that always remained in my mind... for years afterward was Ethel Merman's classic pratfall at the very end of the film. To those people who find this boring, dated or otherwise unacceptable, then consider this: not a single obscenity or for sexual inuendo is in this film. It is the epic film the whole family can watch, enjoy and not feel awkaward about watching with a different generation.Stanley Kramer's sprawling 1963 comedy about a search for buried treasure by at least a dozen people--all played by well-known entertainers of their day--is the kind of mass comedy that Hollywood hasn't made in many years. (Another example from around the same time is Blake Edwards's The Great Race.) After a number of strangers (including Milton Berle, Jonathan Winters, Sid Caesar, Phil Silvers, and others) witness a dying stranger (Jimmy Durante) identify the location of hidden money, a conflict-ridden hunt begins, watched over carefully by a suspicious cop (Spencer Tracy). The ensuing two and a half hours of mayhem has its ups and downs--some bits and performers are certainly funnier than others. But Kramer, who is better known for socially conscious, serious cinema (Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?), is in a mood for broad comic characterization, and some of his jokes are so intentionally obvious (Durante literally kicks a bucket when he dies), they'd have a place in Airplane! Watch for lots of cameo appearances, including Jerry Lewis (who had called Kramer and asked him why he hadn't been invited to participate). Read more Less

This is my all time favorite comedy! I first saw it as a teenager in 1963 when it was released. Comedians like these will probably never be seen again. With comedians like Uncle Miltie, Sid Ceaser, Jim Backus, Arnold Stang, Phil Silvers, and Spencer... Tracy thrown in for good measure make this flick a laugh riot from end to end!! Todays comedians could take lessons from these guys in this laugh riot. Read more Less

How could a movie with nearly every popular comic (circa 1963) not be hilarious? It's not perfect but more than anything it's a lot of fun. Watch out for Jonathan Winters at the gas station and sid caesar in the hardware store; two not easily... forgotten scenes. Read more Less

One of the FUNNIEST movies EVER

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Oct 3, 2003

    Pros: Amazing Cast!

    Cons: None

I saw this movie for the first time when I was about 9, and laughed so hard my sides hurt. I saw it again through older eyes at 16, and STILL laughed so hard my sides hurt. I'm in my 30's now, and when I recently saw it, I laughed so hard m...y eyes teared! This is one of those movies that transcends age - everyone who watches it will find something hilarous! From the moment a character LITERALLY Kicks the Bucket, to basement of the hardware store scene, to the grand finale, this movie lacks for NOTHING. Every single comedic tool is used in it, yet there's no cursing or vulgarity. It relies completely on the story to make you laugh, and in today's world that's a rare thing.Who can forget, "I'm coming to get you Moma!!!" being screamed at the top of Sylvester's lungs as he barrels down the coast? And how about everyone going flying out of the windows and down fire escapes towards the end (you couldn't do that scene today!).If you treasure belly-laughs, then this is the movie for you! Excellent Comedy

Everything is well thought out. It just shows that if you make a good story, hire good actors, and get a great director, you will make what this movie is - a classic.

    Great Movie

More "Hall of Fame" actors than any movie ever made. As a 56 year old I still watch it on cable. Have seen it at least 30 times. Might be best comedy of all time. This movie could not be produced in today's PC times (2003) which mak...es it a "Sad, sad, sad, sad world" Read more Less
