Pro Reviews: It's Fun to Steal

  • All Music Guide

Just when you thought John Flansburgh of They Might Be Giants couldn't get any goofier, he ups the ante with this mind-bogglingly eclectic side project. While his nasal vocals are unmistakable, the addition of scratching by DJ and exotic percussion by Mauro Refrosco make for fresh textures to the music. Granted, this is not a great departure from the typical TMBG gig, but there is plenty of fun still in the mix. Dipping into the boogaloo bag for the disc's 14 tracks, Flansburgh and company come up with funk ("Creepy"), cocktail ("Taste the Bass"), disco ("Extra Krispy"), new wave ("Back Stabbing Liar"), and much more. However, a warning label could be added to the CD case: sense of humor required.
