Chris Robinson brought out the best in David

    By Jake  Feb 4, 2008

Pros: Great record for Crosby fans

Cons: I can't think of any

When he brought out Chris Robinson to sing with him on Almost Cut my Hair, there was more soul in that 4 minutes then I think the entire decade of the 80's! What a number. Never heard David sing that hard and I think he did it because of the chal...lenge of Robinson, who was excellent. But David outlasted him on that last note and I love that. David won. Robinson probably stopped or just felt David should get that last umph - perhaps even planned that way - but it was so cool. And Pevar - damn that guy can play. High energy, well done classic record. Solid live album

If you like Crosby you'll love this album. The highlights are at the beginning as Crosby unveils some new (back then)songs that he is obviously very proud of. His voice is clear and strong - and he packs in some great background vocals. This would... be a 5 star except that towards the end when Nash comes out they start covering older material, which is good but lacks the energy of the first tracks. Read more Less

  • All Music Guide

Recorded December 7, 1993, at the ~Whisky-A-Go-Go in Hollywood, California, this is a David Crosby live album and a good representation of his solo concert performance. In fact, it's a little better than usual, since Crosby is joined by singers Chris Robinson of the Black Crowes and his old partner Graham Nash. Crosby splits the 71-minute set just about evenly between more recent solo efforts -- including two newly written songs -- and faithful renditions of favorites from his Crosby, Stills, Nash Young days. Inadvertently, the set list serves to confirm that the latter represent his best work, while at the same time we've heard songs like "Long Time Gone" and "Wooden Ships" so often in studio and live performances that there isn't much reason to have additional recordings of them. The album's chief virtue is in the expression of Crosby's personality, but there isn't enough of that. So, while these are often spirited performances, they don't add to our understanding of the artist the ...way a live album should. - William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide Read more Less

David Crosby

The singular odyssey of David Crosby remains one of the more remarkable tales in the annals of music history. As a founding member of the pioneering American groups the Byrds and Crosby, Stills Nash, he helped create and popularize the highly influential folk-rock sound, forging the richly harmonic, radiantly acoustic approach which defined the West Coast music scene f... Read more
