This Album is Classic and it surpasses Illmatic as Nas's best. Lyrically and Creatively it is better than Illmatic. It has a Darker sound to it than its predeccessor and that sound fits the mood of the whole album. The Thing I like the most about... the album is that it's kind of cinematic, but also has little jewels thrown in between his mini street tales and there are morals behind his stories in this album. Plus the Album has so much more depth and I'm puzzled why this album is slept on so heavily. especially with quotes like these: A thug changes, and Love changes and best friends become strangers - The Message The whole I Gave you Power I never brag how real I keep, cause It's the best Secret - Take it in blood Currency is made in trust of the Messiah, so I'm spendin it to get higher - Take it in blood Why shoot the breeze about? When you can be about - Take it in blood Never freakin the beast, seven heads, got the righteous threatened Life Was Written, the plot curves behind the settin' - Suspect What you with? Luchi or drama, no sleep means insomnia No need to check the clock, the streets are timin you - Suspect Those are just some of the quotables, I just feel people should listen to this album in deep concentration and really listen to what he is saying cause lyrically this is Nas's best. People tend to like Illmatic more because beats usually catch your ear before lyrics do, but in It was written the lyrics compensate for the beats to the point it's better than Illmatic, but this is just my opinion. This is the most overlooked album in Hip-Hop history. It doesn't get the respect it is due! A lot of people argue that It Was Written is Nas's greatest album; however, I'm a firm believer in "Illmatic." Overall, this album is fl...awless and is a great purchase for the Hip-Hop fan. Today, in an era where lyrical content and thought doesn't seem to matter in hip-hop, fans can still look back and listen to It Was Written, another classic album delivered by Nas. This definitley passed my expectations. As an MC, this was an alb...um I had to listen to, and I learned a lot from it, because of the amazing lyrical skills. At the time when this album came out, some judged the album and considered it a sophmore jinx, but today we all know it was another classic. The best track on the album is "I Gave You Power" where he vividly describes himself as a gun through a metaphoric relationship. Nas was and continues to be a lyrical genius, and this is what hip-hop needs to be. We need our 2pacalypse, our Reasonable Doubts, our Ready 2 Die, and our Illmatics, but what hip-hop also needs is It Was Written. I highly recommend this album to true lovers of hip-hop, and those who understand and appreciate the power of hip-hop, because today all we have is garbage like Dem Franchize Boyz, Jermaine Dupri, and other people who dont appreciate lyrical content and beats as a whole working together. I'm glad we have people like Nas, Jay-Z, Eminem, Dr. Dre, Rakim, KRS-One, and other intellectuals who care about lyrical content within the music, which keep hip-hop advancing forward. what nore can i say, this is nas the un-disputed champion of NYC rappers. how come are the good rappers get nothing when the wack one get everything, i'll tell u why cuz the people dont wanna hear any truth behind rap, the american society doesnt... want truth they want wackness (i guess). Jay-z is the defination of wack, and the arrogance made the beef start, but now that its over i aint gonna restart it. THe album "it was written" is nas best album next to illmatic. THe album is flawless in the beats, and rapps. great productions team of QB's finest(havoc from mobb deep, l.e.s,poke and tone), and the one and only Dr.Dre. The lyrical side is nice, the firm is allight but, i dont know about it, but of course nas, but cormega (aiight), foxy brown (ok),havoc on the "set up" trak (damn right), proidigy (yea,u know it), and nature (good) make up the lyrical team. I think the best songs are traks 2,4,6,7,8,9,11,12,13,14, mosty of the traks on the album. If you like hip-hop and if u like nas, go cop it if dont have it. If u dont like nas, well, forget u!
