There are reasons this movie won so many awards. First of all the director is Frank Capra (It's a Wonderful Life) and no one even tries to make movies as well as he did. Clark Gable gives a memorable performance as Peter Warne, a reporter who tracks... down a runaway debutant girl to get the scoop. Despite the summary on this page, the tale does not transpire entirely on a bus. Claudette Colbert is simply gorgeous and amusing in her character, Ellen Andrews. Ellen is a headstrong girl who has run away from her father to marry the man she thinks she's in love with, King Westley. She hops a bus for New York and along the way meets Peter. He realizes that she's the girl in the papers who's father is offering ten thousand bucks for her return. After they hitchhike and steal a car, they spend a night in a motel with a blanket separating them. There's a very touching episode in the cabin, referred to by buffs as the "walls of Jericho scene part 1." I won't spoil the ending for those who haven't seen it yet. You'll notice similar lines or situations between this movie and others, but you have to remind yourself that this was the first and it's still the best. Read more Less
