Pro Reviews: It Ain't Rocket Science, It's Eugenius!

  • All Music Guide

A six-track promotional EP released shortly after Eugenius' debut album, Oomalama, It's Ain't Rocket Science, It's Eugenius is a charmingly ragged history lesson. Eugenius got most of their early notice because Kurt Cobain stated in several interviews that singer/songwriter Eugene Kelly's previous band, the Vaselines, were personal favorites of his, and this live disc (four tracks from an August 1992 BBC session and two from a 1993 session at Baltimore's WHFS) includes two Vaselises classics, "Sex Sux (Amen)" and "Molly's Lips," which Nirvana had done an inferior cover of in 1991. This version is nearly the equal of the Vaselines' hypnotic original. There are also three low-key, largely acoustic versions of songs from Oomalama, including the minimalist title track and a delightful remake of Beat Happening's oft-covered "Indian Summer."
