Pro Reviews: Irving Mills and His Hotsy Totsy Gang, Vol. 2
| EXPERT RATING: From AMG Reviews The second of three LPs from the British Retrieval label that reissue all of the recordings released under the name of "Irving Mills and His Hotsy Totsy Gang" has music recorded during six sessions. These include a couple of test pressings and two rare selections from 1929 that were recorded strictly for radio airplay. Mills introduces the music on the latter, but is otherwise absent. Many all-stars from the era make notable appearances, including trumpeters Phil Napoleon and Manny Klein, trombonist Miff Mole, Bill "Bojangles" Robinson (who sings and tap dances on "Ain't Misbehavin'" and "Doin' the New Low Down"), and clarinetists Pee Wee Russell and Jimmy Dorsey. An extra bonus is the participation of Hoagy Carmichael, who leads the band through seven of his numbers (including an early uptempo version of "Stardust"), playing piano and singing three songs. All three volumes are recommended, particularly since some of the music has not yet been reissued on CD. - Scott Yanow, All Music Guide |
