Iron Man Stands Firm Even on DVD

Pros: There are two bonus features on the double disc edition that make buying it worth the money.

Cons: The two real worthwhile bonus features on the double disc edition are the only worthwhile bonus features. They should have been placed on the single-disc edition.

Who says a superhero has to have super powers to be a superhero? Not Bruce Wayne, and obviously, not one Tony Stark. Iron Man was Marvel's first blockkbuster of 2008. It is a movie that stands alone in the Marvel universe. It is essentially Marve...l's answer to DC's Batman. Here is an ordinary man, who just happens to be rich (just like Bruce Wayne), and uses his money and technology (again, like Wayne) to develop tools in order to be a hero. Iron Man helped to bolster ticket sales for theaters in a big way in the summer of 2008. Now that it has made its way to DVD, it is still just as good as it was in theaters. Those who want the full movie experience have been rewarded for their patience, too, in the Ultimate 2-Disc Edition. The ultimate 2-disc edition comes loaded with bonus extras that while they might be watched only once, true movie buffs and comic book geeks will enjoy them regardless. The most worthwhile of the bonus features comes in the form of the 7-part "Making of" documentary. The documentary, running just shy of 2 hours, follows the evolution of the movie from the earliest stages of pre-production to the big premiere night in Hollywood. There are numerous bonus features on the second disc of the Ultimate 2-disc edition. And the "Making of" documentary is the most impressive of the features. But there is another just as worthwhile feature in "Wired: The Visual Effects of Iron Man." This feature shows audiences just how much work went into making the three different suits. It goes into depth with each of the three studios contracted to help develop the suits and integrate them into the movie. It shows how they managed to help make the suits for the necessary CG portions, and for the actual live action portions. The remaining bonus features on the second disc of the Ultimate 2-Disc edition are basically filler. Even the 6-part "History of The Hero" feature runs at just around half an hour. What's more, the main disc that contains the movie oddly lacks any commentary from the movie's cast and crew. There are deleted scenes, of course. But still that does not entirely make up for the lack of commentary. This being the case, those who don't care about all of the extra features would be just as well suited to buy the singe disc-edition. Marvel Studios would have done just as well to put the two primary features on the single disc. This would have made it cheaper for fans, and just as enjoyable. Regardless of whether one buys the single or double disc edition of Iron Man, this movie is a must for any true fan of action movies and comic books alike. It is easily the best action movie of 2008, both in theaters and on DVD. Some would argue against that. They would claim that the new Batman sequel, The Dark Knight, was the best action movie. But that movie is more of a crime drama than an action movie. And Indiana Jones IV has come to mixed reviews. Those mixed reviews are fully justified, too. So that still makes Iron Man the best action movie of 2008 in theaters and on DVD. Read more Less
