    This was Coltrane's final album, and altho somewhat skeletal in its structure (not to mention unusual at its time of release), Intersteller Space still remains a classic. The style is basically "free jazz" featuring Rashied Ali on drums and Coltrane... himself on tenor sax; as well as incessant jingle-bells, purportedly a aural motif. The tracks may seem somewhat repetitive, owing to the albums minimum band lineup; however, the musicians' playing is intense -- especially Ali (who replaced Elvin Jones) with his rickety-cum-consistent drumming. All in all, Intersteller Space is definately a swell listen and deserves its 4 star rating. Read more Less

    Not released for the first time until 1974 but now available in expanded form as a CD, this set of duets by tenor saxophonist John Coltrane and drummer Rashied Ali are full of fire, emotion and constant abstract invention. The original four pieces ("Mars," "Venus," "Jupiter" and "Saturn") are joined by "Leo" and "Jupiter Variation." Coltrane alternates quiet moments with sections of great intensity, showing off his phenominal technique and ability to improvise without the need for chordal instruments. Rousing if somewhat inaccessible music.
