Pro Reviews: Inside Chicago 3

  • All Music Guide

The music on this live set from 1993 is high-quality bebop. Tenor saxophonist Von Freeman (whose tone is more radical than his swinging ideas) and the fine trumpeter Brad Goode are known to an extent, but the other four Chicago-based musicians (trombonist Paul McKee, pianist Ron Perillo, bassist Stewart Miller, and drummer Bob Rummage) are on the same level. In fact, Perillo is a particularly strong player who sometimes takes solo honors. The musicians stretch out on seven familiar standards, and a lot of sparks fly. Straight-ahead jazz collectors will definitely want this set, recorded at Chicago's ~Green Mill, along with the other discs in the series.

Von Freeman, while not per se a free jazz player, does exhibit traits commonly associated with the avant-garde: a roughly-hewn, vocalic tone; a flexible, somewhat imprecise approach to rhythm; and a fanciful har... Read more
