The Big Beat reissue of Inner Mystique and One Step Beyond, released in 1968 and 1969, represents the short-lived Chocolate Watchband at its strangest and hardest. These albums combine their best psych songs -- including "In the Past," "Uncle Morris," and "Voyage of the Trieste" -- with clunky garage versions of "I'm Not Like Everybody Else," "Let's Go, Let's Go, Let's Go," "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue," and "Medication" (also covered by the Standells). Both sessions were overseen by Ed Cobb and include numerous studio musicians, as the actual band was either too stoned or simply not interested in playing on any particular day.

The Chocolate Watchband

The Chocolate Watchband never charted a record nationally. Indeed, ask most casual '60s rock fans about them and you'll probably get little more than a blank stare. Most will probably remember their AVI Records labelmates the Standells more clearly, because they actually managed to chart a few singles. Alas, the Watchband had the disadvantage of being a punkier band tha... Read more
