Infected inoculates Sony's handheld with a dose of oldfashioned runandgun shooting, designed to spread a player's influence like a PSP pandemic. Players take the role of a young police officer named Stevens, who seems to be one of the few people immune to the effects of a mysterious virus that's begun to infect nearly everyone else in New York City.

A friendly scientist figures that something in Stevens veins is the secret to his salvation, and rigs up a weapon that allows the police officer to fire small doses of his own blood at the zombielike victims of the plague. It turns out the scientist was right infected creatures hit with a shot from Stevens' blood gun tend to explode, quickly and violently (and often, messily).

Aside from the singleplayer shooting, two Infected players can fight headtohead, using customized characters. The victor in such a duel "infects" the loser with a unique, identifiable strain of the virus, which may then be passed on to opponents the infected player bests in the future. ~ T.J. Pros: Fast-paced zombie-killing action; innovative and ambitious online component; solid frame rate.

Cons: Humor is hit-and-miss; single-player game is far too short; multiplayer game is just no fun.

Infected takes place in New York City, two weeks before Christmas. As the game opens, you watch as the lighting of the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree is interrupted by a small band of zombies, who are quick to pluck everything from limbs to intern...al organs from the living, be they stately city officials or young boys in wheelchairs. You'll notice right away that the overall tone in Infected is darkly irreverent. There are some genuinely clever moments in the game--such as a one-sided conversation between your commissioner and the prime minister of Japan--and the regular lampooning of Christmas-driven consumerism and the nature of NYC tourism are a bit more insightful than you would expect from a zombie murder simulation. Often, though, the comic timing is off, or simply misguided, for instance turning a sequence where a developmentally challenged child is mistaken for a zombie from grimly humorous to just awkward. Infected

It's one of the best games on the PSP, a better shooter than even Coded Arms or Battlefront II. Fun is to be had here. Read more

    Infected (PSP)

There's a real raw, visceral satisfaction to Infected, which is undermined by a short, single-minded story mode and an ambitious but inherently flawed multiplayer game. Read more
