This movie was awesome to watch...to hear...I fell in love with the point of this film...(The end of the world) Will Smith proved he was an actor. I adore Jeff Goldblum. He is wildly entertaining as the "genious save us all" Vivica did an awesome job as well. Great movie that you will want to watch again and again:)

Cons: The story. The acting. Everything but the effects...
ID4 is a big budget feel good movie with enough special effects for five movies. And just barely enough story for the 30 second commerical. Barely.
Okay, the special efffects and the extra features on the DVD are the reason DVD was created in the first place. This is the movie that was created to show what DVD is all about. To show what HiDef and Dolby and DTS can do. It has massive sound, massive lights, massive effects.
And that's it.
The storyline. Come on. Aliens that can travel hundreds of lightyears and have evolved to the point of being telepathic want to take over Earth and plunder its resources and take everything. (One presumes humans must not taste very good since we aren't on the plate) But, to manage a takeover, the aliens, which can kill a human with a thought and control dead humans with a touch... can't manage to shoot a couple of airplanes out of the sky and have to destroy buildings with superbeams and need ground troops to take control. Huh?
If I'm advanced enough to travel half the galaxy... why not just drop a virus to kill the humans so I can take the rest? Why not just use nukes or EMPs that can shut down electricity or blockout sunlight or create massive storms to kill the humans? Or... why not CAPTURE the humans as food? Why all the bluster? And why it is my alien mothership can be virus infected by an Apple notebook? Why can my ships, which can blow a city to bits, can't manage to defeat a few F-15s? Or a biplane? Jeez...
Okay, so the premise is hard to believe. But, hey, Will Smith is a Air Force pilot. Dating a stripper. Okay. Yeah. I can pick up just about any gal I want... I'm trying to become an astronaut. But I'm dating a stripper. Okay. And the acting? The one liners are just too dead pan. The fate of the world hangs in the balance and what do I say "We coulda been freinds, but no you gotta be a bad---." Come on.
Bill Pullman. As President. Sorry. He's nice. And a nice President? Nope. He plays the part as too squeaky clean to have ever been elected to a school board... much less anything else. Mary McDonald... ditto... too squeaky clean to be his wife. Vivica Fox. Okay. Now she can act. I can believe, watching her and hearing her that she would be a stripper. Vivica Fox manages to make the role of stripper look believable. the one other thing I could believe... idiots standing on the tops of buildings holding signs saying "Bring back Elvis" to great alien vistors.
It's why aliens won't EVER bother to announce their presence to humans. We're too stupid to be worth talking to. And, a film like ID4 just proves it. Worth buying if you want flashy special effects. But, there are better movies to get for that too.Was this review helpful? Yes - NoIndependence Day

A feel good film about some really bad ET's, with some
funny, even memorable, shots and dialogue. Surprisingly,
many people missed the fact that it's a spoof of dozens of science fiction films (I counted references to or steals from at least 37). Will Smith is at his best (as in "Men in Black"), and should stay in this kind of role (he just isn't that good in a dramatic role). A good summer movie!Was this review helpful? the actors were great especially bill pullman! he is so cute. all the actors were very convincing. will smith did a very good job as so did all the actors. i thought that the picture and the sound effects were great so was the specccial effects. this movie is great and i think that everybody needs to watch it a lot and buy the movie. this movie will be a treasure in your home for many years.

A very good cast with an excellent story line and plot. Written and directed very well. Made very believable, like it could really happen: Being invaded from space. Has lots of action, with a few bits of humor to add. The ending is one to die for. A+ film. Must see.
