Wong Kar-Wai at his best!
, February 22, 2002Reviewer: miles_fan2001 - See all miles_fan2001's reviewsI've seen lots and lots of Wong Kar-Wai movies, almost all of them (except his first one), but I've never have the feeling of watching "In The Mood For Love". Movies of Wong Kar-Wai always have some ridiculous scenes, such as massaging the pig, searching for lover's hair when breaking into his house...things like that. In this movie, he did the same thing too, but it's different, it won't let you feel weird, "rehearsing" all possibilities of how their other-halves' meeting and leaving is a reflection of the characters' crisis-messed mind. Cinematography of course is one of the best elements inside this movie. Christopher Doyle is always a very talented cinematographer. Another thing I have to say is the costumes and hair design, it's perfectly matching the movie's "mood"! You won't feel that people in this movie are from 21st century. So, people who haven't watched this movie, please, get a copy home, switch off all the lights, switch volume to maximum, the best thing is you have a big screen, throw yourself back to the 1960s, and enjoy this movie like a paparazzi who is over-interested to this two normal person's life! ...

Pros: Beautifully filmed, sets a very poignant mood
Cons: Some boring scenes with no action
If you enjoy suspense of the romantic kind, sexual tension, and torturingly repressed emotions, then this is the movie for you. A man and a woman whose spouses are cheating on them, begin as strangers and form an interesting friendship based on their spouses' infidelity. They try to imagine how the affair started and end up falling in love. But they are determined not to be the adulterous scums their spouses were and make every attempt to curb their feelings for one another. You can cut the tension between these characters with a knife! The whole time, you're rooting for them to finally get together, but they just won't. This leaves me to wonder, "what's wrong with these ppl!?". But they're worried about their reputations, being seen together and the gossip inspired by their meetings.
The film is beautifully shot. The director employs a well-suited theme song (which alone is enough to break your heart) as well as slow motion shots. There are a lot of quiet moments in which you feel right there in the life of the character. The actors do a great job of revealing their emotions without action or dialogue. This film takes a little patience to watch, but it's definitely worth it. ...
