    In the Bedroom (2001)

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Sep 7, 2002

This was a terrible movie for the following reasons:1) Over use of the slow quiet pan.2) Awful script.3) Poor acting by everyone involved. The character development was not present at all. At no point did the characters or actors elict any kind of sy...mpathy (or any emotion for that matter) from the viewers. This mixed in with a well worn plot make this film very tiring to watch. My advice--do some laundry with the 130 minutes the film lasts if you do decide to watch it. Read more Less

    Clumsy and enigmatic but heartfelt

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Aug 27, 2002

Sensitively yet shakily-directed crime-themed melodrama, initially promoted as a straight drama to Oscar voters. Very intriguing devotion to its authentic contemporary New England community & warm-season setting (almost a distant yet superior sequel... to 1997's coldly-lit Ang Lee film THE ICE STORM), BEDROOM charts the social/emotional disintegration and inner struggles when a professional middle-aged couple's only son pays a terrible price for courting a not-divorced local lower-class mother. The film is a series of perturbed, frustrated, resigned statements delivered by a committed cast. But its hard to find a cohesive, "movie-like" feel in its core; authentic-looking art direction and color-saturated photography that do not define identity at the same rate as the acting, and somewhat leaden writing for the supporting characters alongside the film's "big three" [Spacek, Wilkinson, Tomei], not surprising whenever Hollywood adapts literary short stories for the screen. But I was more taken by this film than I originally thought and I wish more studios would take a few more chances on risky material like this. Read more Less

Can't believe someone called this a chic

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Aug 25, 2002

Based on the content of this movie I can't believe someone would consider it a chick movie! This is a very disturbing movie. I can't believe that disturbing wasn't even mentioned in any of the other reviews. There were so many instances where I was m...ade to feel uncomfortable by what characters were saying or doing. The juxtaposition of the two crimes is what holds the movie together. How different each one is even though the end result is the same. The fact that people thought it was slow is easy to understand becauise with all the trash action movies out there Daytona seems slow paced. Its the tension between characters and what is not said between characters that makes the movie worth watching. The actor who plays the fater (Wilkerson?) is excellent in fact I think he does a better job then Spacek. Tomei also does a stellar job as the girlfriend. Worth watching. Read more Less

    Am I watching Lifetime T.V.?

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Aug 19, 2002

Horrible movie, great acting, but horrible movie. There are so many drawn out sences in this movie, like the walk up the driveway at the end. I could barely keep my eyes open as it was and then I have to watch this long trek up the driveway. It se...ems as though the director shot extra long scences of nothing happening to cover the fact they had no script. The only thing I liked was the shot of him removing the bandaid to show what he did did not heal his wounds. Why did they not include the emotional scence of him telling his wife their son was dead? Last of all, did this town not have 911? Hello, he would not be dead if she would have called the police. Oh wait then they wouldn't have a movie right? Well no matter how hard they tried, they still didn't have a movie. Read more Less

    Slow beyond belief.

This movie could have been easily edited down to 30 minutes. Much too long and drawn out.

    In The Bedroom

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Aug 17, 2002

This is an astounding film. Its script (based on a short story/novel) is the core of the film, followed by great performances by Tom Wilkinson and Sissy Spacek. It is about a young man, and his relationships with a woman, his own parents, and an ex-b...oyfriend. When a death occurs, the film follows the characters grief, and the course of action they take to deal with it.i give it 4 stars only because of its slight 'hollywood' ending. Read more Less
