a masterpiece of modern progressive jazz

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Sep 15, 2006

    Pros: stunningly complete and beautiful

    Cons: perhaps not long enough

This album by George Benson is an absolute masterpiece of progressive modern jazz, showcasing his UNREAL vocal skills.... combined with guitar playing that has made him often listen among the ten best guitarists in the world. The man is incredible. ...His vocal range and reflexion comes straight from the soul. Some of this album can be, as was often said of Luther Vandross' best, to essentially be MADE FOR loving, if'n you follow me. It's well produced, full of range from slow mood songs to upbeat, car driving jazz. The third track, Lady Love Me (One More Time) is a jazz masterpiece par excellant. It is stunningly good, and should be a staple in every progressive jazz fan's collection. The title track is great, and so is 'Late at Night; which simply rings out with message. This album is well worth whatever you pay for it, and George Benson has more talent in his pinky finger than 50 Cent will have in an entire career. This album is in his five best albums, but many OTHER albums by George Benson are incredible as well, and well worth buying. The man is a talent like very few others-- an exceptional guitarist who can truly sing with all the love that can be within a man's soul. Read more Less

This is MUSIC. For those of you punk guys out there...you should quit and start with George here....you'll change. George is the greatest singer and guitar player in pop and jazz we've ever heard. He's great!

In search of more platinum, Benson turns to one time Atlantic Records ace producer Arif Mardin for support. Yet Mardin's best days seemed to be behind him, as this mostly routine package of period RB backbeats, synthesizer rhythm tracks and love songs indicates. Any competent soul vocalist could have fit in comfortably here. For jazz fans, Benson's albums at this point become a search for buried treasure, for his guitar time is extremely limited. But when you do encounter a Benson solo, hang on tight. "Love Will Come Again," otherwise a routine soul bumper, concludes with a magnificent solo in octaves that Wes Montgomery would have envied, breathtaking in its economy and swing. Also, check out the instrumental "In Search Of A Dream" for proof that George could still burn.

Biography

The George Benson Quartet

These days, George Benson (born March 22, 1943, Pittsburgh, PA) is often described as a commercial RB/pop singer who sometimes moonlights as a pop-jazz guitarist. But early in his career -- when Benson was still in his twenties -- the jazz world thought of him as a guitar-playing hard bop/soul-jazz instrumentalist whose primary influences were Wes Montgomery and Charlie... Read more
