Pros: Everyone can love a few songs, easy to like them all

    Cons: None

Solid is the best word to describe this album. I anxiously awaited a song that would be as powerful emotionally and as strong as Buried Myself Alive. After hearing tracks from the Maybe Memories CD I didn't know if they could do it. But I was ...completely wrong. Waited a long time for a band from Utah to be good. Definitely will outsell 1st album, maybe double platinum? Screw the people who said they sold out, their first album was raw, this album is polished. Album shows the talent of Quinn. His riffs are timed perfectly they fit the songs. I think the best compliment to a musician is if it inspires one to want to play their music. Quinn makes me want to pick up guitar.Track ratings 1-10 and why.1)Take it Away 9/10 Reminiscent of 1st Album; Strong Vocals2)I Caught Fire 10/10 Band reaches new level, entire work is amazing, timing, guitars, drum work, lyrics, etc3)Let it Bleed 8/10 Catchy rhythmic guitar tabs throughout. A little repetitive.4)All that I've Got 10/10 String instruments, Bert sounds amazing, shows bands progression in all aspects (songwriting, complementing music with lyrics and vice versa)5)Cut Up Angels 8/10 Different direction than most songs, but it works. Bert plays piano in background for a bit.6)Listening 9/10 Screaming mixed with deliberate flow. 7)Yesterday's Feelings 8/10 New style/direction more evident here. More of a story-telling approach. Bert carries song.8)Light With A Sharpened Edge 8/10 Song flows well from start to end. I wish the unreleased track from Maybe Memories was here.9)Sound Effects And Overdramatics 9/10 Definite first album appeal. Great Screaming from Bert. Type of song that made Bert famous. Quinn is strong yet again with guitar solos. He doesn't try to outplay the band, and yet you can appreciate it almost as its own song.10)Hard To Say 10+/10 Most surprising song on the album. Show's just how talented Bert is. Close to a ballad, but Bert nails this song. He sounds amazing. Definitely about Kate. Evokes emotion throughout. Compares to On My Own from their first album, but better.11)Lunacy Fringe 7/10 Shows a way different style. If I were to hear this I wouldn't say it was a Used song. String instruments again, like an upright bass, maybe even a Cello??? Piano in the background again. Creative but I'm not in love with it.12)I'm a Fake 8/10 Bert intro's with a poem/verse. Quinn again makes his presence known. Vocals come from entire band. Screaming from all. Again, true to what first album portrays. This album will appeal to a wider audience than the first one did, but as a huge fan of the first album, I would have to say I like this album better. I usually skip tracks 3-5 on the first album, but I can't get away with it on this album. Get this album. Read more Less

Pro Reviews: In Love and Death

  • All Music Guide

Somewhere in the early 2000s, AFI, My Chemical Romance, Thrice, and the Used emerged into a polyphonic murder spree of tortured vocals, jarring time shifts, and expensive packaging and production. By 2004 it was very difficult to tell them apart; slogan Ts and elaborate facial hair helped, but their output's homogenization of a style that was muddled to begin with made identification for anyone but tortured teenage scribblers very difficult. Though it eventually slows to a mush of bleeding heart, screaming brain, and wrangled, urgent guitar, the Used does show some restraint on In Love and Death (technically, its second official album). "I Caught Fire" is irresistible, because it uses its big budget filters and six string layers to its advantage, building tension for the triumphant chorus release. "Take It Away" sees the inherent power of a solid riff, and actually revitalizes the ridiculously playedout singing guy/screaming guy dynamic for a few moments, and fans will soon be singing ...along to the modified pop of "Cut Up Angels". They'll likely love the album, as they do the releases of the Used's stylistic brethren. But there has to be a point in the future where these bands will break from their incredibly rigid formula, and make something unique to their own depression and heartbreak. In this glorious future, raucous yelling and sensitive crooning will unite around the promising tension of guitar, and the string sections, pianos, and overwrought production values will be locked out of the studio. And this future will be called growing up. - Johnny Loftus, All Music Guide Read more Less

Biography

The Used

The members of the Used had to overcome homelessness and substance abuse, not to mention the strait-laced attitudes of their hometown of Orem, UT, to make their brand of hard rock. But they persevered and earned a contract with Reprise Records, releasing their self-titled debut album in June 2002. - William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide Read more
