    Classic Jack -- Excellent

    Pros: Quiet funk, beautiful inlay

Cons: won't be a commercial success after the initial rush

Jack Johnson is a genius. The cool, quiet stud from Hawaii has once again produced an album with soft, warm undertones, which operate behind sad and happy (and in some cases meaningless) lyrics. He has a style which I like to refer to as "quiet ...funk" there is just such a groove in the music he writes and the way he sings his songs. I don't think however that it will be a commercial success, because for those who were not blessed with the ability to observe and interpret, the songs on this album will be passed off as "achingly similar" to those on on & on, but this is not the case. I have to cut this short because I'm going to learn all the songs on my guitar. I highly recommend it. Read more Less

    Good follow on

By Ted  Mar 2, 2005 | 4 out of 4 found this In Between Dreams review helpful

    Pros: Great variety

    Cons: Very short in duration

This is a good follow on to his previous album - "On and On". The album has a great flow with a great mix of acoustic and electric cuts. Quite notable are "Banana Pancakes" and "Staple it Together". The only downside is ...that is quite short in duration. There is a total of 14 songs and the total length of the CD is 41:02. Pro Reviews: In Between Dreams

  • All Music Guide

Singer/songwriter Jack Johnson writes songs that just feel good. The simple equation of him and an acoustic guitar is warm and relaxed, a cozy formula that's made him a favorite among American college crowds. It should be to no surprise that Johnson sticks with what he does best for his third album, In Between Dreams. Producer Mario Caldato Jr. is back again, touching up Johnson's summery backdrop for another playful set of songs. The genreblending charm and sweetness that made Brushfire Fairytales and On and On so nice doesn't change that much, but does it really have to change? Johnson, alongside drummer Adam Topol and bassist Mario Podlewski, has never pretended to be anyone else other than a decent guy who enjoys writing and performing goodnatured songs. In Between Dreams is just a bit brighter and more upbeat. Becoming a father in 2004 might also have something to do with that. Tender moments such as "If I Only I Could" and "No Other Way" showcase a more reserved side on In Betwee...n Dreams. Other highlights include the lullabylike "Breakdown" and the bossa nova rhythms of "Do You Remember." Whether he's singing about being in lovewhich he does quite well on "Better Together" and "Banana Pancakes"or reflecting on the hardships of love, Johnson's laid back approach is his biggest strength. People cling to that nice guy thing. - MacKenzie Wilson, All Music Guide Read more Less
