Pro Reviews: If You Saw Thro' My Eyes/Tigers Will Survive

  • All Music Guide

Vertigo combined Ian Matthews' two 1971 albums, If You Saw Thro' My Eyes and Tigers Will Survive, on one CD. After leaving Southern Comfort, Matthews reunited with Fairport Convention members Richard Thompson and Sandy Denny and made one of his finest albums with If You Saw Thro' My Eyes. Though the material and playing is superior to his previous work, it was unfortunately overlooked at the time. Recorded during two different periods of time broken up by a U.S. tour, Tigers Will Survive, his follow-up to If You Saw Through My Eyes, lacks the focus of its predecessor. Still worthwhile if only for "Morning Star," one of Matthews' most beautiful originals.
