Before the glammy, leatherclad homewrecker Alvin Stardust, there was the pout and pompadour of Shane Fenton. Fenton's upswing hairdo and rakish gabardine were the perfect accessories to his persona as a less dangerous Gene Vincent his act emphasized the puppy dog eyes over the hint of danger. "Well I got no friends/And if I had/If I had I know I'd treat 'em baaaaaad" "I'm a Moody Guy" is without question a gem of the preBeatles pop era. It's the title track here, accompanied by his three other chart appearances and a clutch of solid album tracks. Highlights include "Cindy's Birthday" with its plaintive reverb guitar and shimmering strings; "Walk Away," which sounds like Roy Orbison, Buddy Holly, and a surf instrumental all at once; and the "Rave On" rewrite "Why Little Girl."
