A hard hitting album, powerful messages

In this second album of Willie D, he expresses his heart with violent and quite powerful lyrics, especially in songs such as Rodney K. where he expresses such opinions as f*** Rodney King. Definitely better a rapper in his group the Geto boys, but ...as far as his few albums go, this is one of the better ones. Read more Less

Like his former group, the Geto Boys' material, Soldier is a mixed proposition, one that stunningly articulates the visceral realities of a disenfranchised existence only to juxtapose it with more no-brain, "dick-ho-bitch" posturing. And Willie D. never shies away from controversy. In "Rodney K" (full title "Fuck Rodney King"), he suggests King is more a complicit Uncle Tom than a symbol of America's institutionalized racism. Still, to place too much of the focus on that song -- as wrongheaded as it is -- would be doing Willie D. a disservice. The title track rips and snorts as good as anything by Ice Cube and Ice-T -- but, the women-hatred and gay-hate that imbue his inchoate sociology throw up new walls that need tearing down.
