Accomplished violinist and drummer as well as vocalist, Chicagoan Della Griffin wears just her singing hat on her inaugural album for the Muse label. She plays it safe by sticking with a play list of recognizable Tin Pan Alley standards which she delivers in her Billy Holiday/Dinah Washington-influenced singing style. Influenced, but not an imitation, as Griffin adds her own sense of timing and phrasing well seasoned with a natural affinity for the blues. The blue, funky feel is boosted by her playing companions. Champion tenor sax player Houston Person is present here, as he is on many Muse releases. He is joined on the horn by a regular member of Griffin's group, Mack Goldsbury. Together, they swing, wail, and sometimes honk, whatever the occasion calls for. But it's the organ of David Braham that makes the strongest instrumental statement during this session as he provides that special harmonic texture and sustained chords which are a trademark of his instrument. Braham's accompanim...ent goes from almost churchlike on "Two Different Worlds" to the swinging, funky "East of the Sun." The latter also provides the vehicle for a notable guitar solo by Randy Johnston. "But Beautiful" becomes an intensely emotional, heart-wrenching scene for Griffin, Person, and Braham. This initial undertaking of just more than 40 minutes of music by a singer with a special affinity with and stylistic approach to the music she sings is recommended. - Dave Nathan, All Music Guide Read more Less
