Pro Reviews: I Wanna Go Where the People Go

  • All Music Guide

Issued in April 1995 as a taster for the Wildhearts' hotly anticipated second album, the not-so-tactfully named P.H.U.Q., this EP was named after said record's manic opening cut -- one of the band's greatest achievements bar none. But it also boasted three rock-solid outtakes to boot, including the bombastic "Shandy Bang" (the first in a series of tunes heavily inspired by Cheap Trick, it quotes the classic "Auf Wiederseh'n") and the incredibly schizophrenic (but wonderfully so) "Can't Do Right for Doing Wrong." Closing the disc is another absolute gem called "Give the Girl a Gun," whose dark lyrical outlook, in typical Wildhearts fashion, is at complete odds with its sugary harmonies -- not to mention its hilarious introduction courtesy of bagpipes (yes, bagpipes).
