Pro Reviews: I Found a Love

  • All Music Guide

Part two of the Falcons' story includes tracks by a young Wilson Pickett. It also omits some tracks by Pickett like "Pow You're In Love," so the selections could have been better. Pickett was 19 years old when he recorded the soulful "I Found a Love," and while it's been remade by heavyweights like Johnny Taylor, none can touch the original. Despite its majesty it only went to number 75 pop; however, it cracked the RB Top Ten at number six. Pickett also showed early brilliance on "Take This Love I Got." No knock to Joe Stubbs, but with Pickett on lead the Falcons were magic. It was Stubbs who led their most successful recording "You're So Fine" (number 17 Pop, number two RB). the Falcons used many leads, including Mack Rice ("Feels Good"), Stubbs ("You Know I Must Love You," among others), Carlis Monroe ("Lonely Nights," "Has It Happened to You") and Eddie Floyd. The helping is decent -- 16 sides cut the old way, and most were mundane -- but when label owner Robert West got it right, t...he results were breathtaking. - Andrew Hamilton, All Music Guide Read more Less
