This is what I call some heavy stuff. This is probably one of godflesh's heavest albums. I'm supised that this is heavyer than fear factory's last 3 albums including obsolete. If you're thinking about getting one of fear factory's... last 3, you should try this out first. Trust me, you will like this too if you like fear factory. Read more Less

    Excellent Industrial Metal

    By Momma  Apr 20, 2004

    Pros: Great songs & production

    Cons: None!

A very well thought out, well-produced CD that is heavy enough to please the metalheads, has enough atmosphere to please Goth-Metallers, but melodic enough to please those who don't particularly care for anything too heavy, Industrial or Gothic. ...Most of the songs are excellent; this is the kind of CD that you can put on and let it play all the way through. (The last track is the weakest IMHO). "Hymns" is crunchy, cold, and worth owning. If you like Fear Factory, Nine Inch Nails, Prong and Ministry, you should definitely check this one out. Pro Reviews: Hymns

  • All Music Guide

For their seventh studio album, Brit grindcore crew Godflesh have returned to the relative simplicity of a guitar/bass/human drummer lineup. Justin Broadrick even sings on a number of songs without the aid of distortion. This isn't to imply that they've lightened up or lost their brutal, pessimistic outlook. The angst and the cold, mechanical feel are still present and correct, but the band sound better than ever. The incredible "Anthem" sees Broadrick in an emotive mood, something he's not been known for on earlier releases, and it works surprisingly well. Opener "Defeated" proudly displays their Sabbath roots, deep and slow, with an atmosphere of menace, while "Paralyzed" out-riffs anything Korn can come up with. As usual, most of the songs come in at over five minutes, with closer "Jesus" stretching out to nearly 13 minutes. If you can't stand Godflesh and their minimalist approach, then Hymns is unlikely to change your mind, but, for the already converted, this is the best album th...e band have released in recent years. - Jim Harper, All Music Guide Read more Less

Biography

Godflesh

If Black Sabbath was reborn as an industrial rock band, they'd probably sound an awful lot like Godflesh. Therefore, it shouldn't come as much of a surprise that Godflesh hails from the same hometown as Sabbath, the tough steel-welding town of Birmingham, England. Although a few other members passed through the Godflesh ranks over the years, the band's undisputed leader... Read more
