One great movie | One great soundtrack

Pros: Some great beats, great artists.

    Cons: Horrible lyrics by DJay.

I bought this soundtrack right after I saw the movie. I have to say, I'm impressed. The artists fit so well together. If my arm wasn't broken...
    Two thumbs up.

See The Movie, THEN get the Soundtrack....

Pros: The correlation between the film and the soundtrack, Trillville's "Man Up", DJay, Al Kapone

    Cons: Remixes, Bad Boy's contributions..

Out of anticipation of a great anticipation to see the movie, I bought the soundtrack to Hustle & Flow to hold me off until the movie made it's debut in theatres a week after the release of the soundtrack. After my initial listens, the only song ...that I really liked was Trillville's "Man Up". Besides the first single (Im A King), it was the best song on the soundtrack. After seeing the movie, the soundtrack made a lot more sense and I liked songs that before I had skipped. The movie gave a meaning and story behind the songs "It's Hard Out Here For A Pimp", "Hustle & Flow (It Aint Over)", and of course, "Whoop That Trick". The soundtrack is a nice compliment to the film, that is assuming that you actually enjoyed the actually movie. If you didn't like the movie, you probably won't like the soundtrack either, with exception of probably Trillville's "Man Up". Read more Less

Pro Reviews: Hustle & Flow [Original Soundtrack]

  • All Music Guide

The lineup spread across the soundtrack for Hustle and Flow cannot be denied. T.I., Juvenile, 8 Ball and MJG, E40, Trillville, Boyz N da Hood, Mike Jones, and several others make this a timely and fitting companion to the film. More importantly, in keeping the connection between film and soundtrack as tight as possible, a couple tracks performed by actor Terrence Howard as Hustle and Flow protagonist DJay, a pimp turned MC are included, along with a handful of dialogue bits. Al Kapone, a Memphisbased rapper asked by director Craig Brewer to write DJay's rhymes, also appears, only adding to the authenticity. While the soundtrack complements the film, most of the tracks provided by the big guns aren't toplevel. That doesn't mean that the disc is useless for those who don't see the film (altogether, the tracks are more memorable than the average cuts granted to a soundtrack), but it's more New Jersey Drive or Bad Boys II than Juice or Above the Rim.
