One of the leaders of England's revivalist movement of the late '40s, Humphrey Lyttelton's music gradually evolved into smallgroup swing and he has alternated between the two idioms throughout his productive career. After serving in the military, Lyttelton played with George Webb's Dixielanders in 1947 and formed his own group the following year.
