    Excellent

Pros: The Edge's Guitar, Bono's Soaring Vocals

Cons: Too New to be Classic

This is an excellent U2 album. No, its not "The Joshua Tree." That was the band's greatest record and will probably remain the band's greatest record. After spending most of the 90's in the euro-pop wilderness U2 returned in ful...l form with 2000's "All That You Can't Leave Behind." What made that record so amazing is that U2 was "U2" again for the first time since "Achtung Baby." "How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb" lacks the inital shock that ATYCLB had. We're no longer surprised that U2 is still capapble of creating excellent music. This album has its high points--"Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own," "Original of the Species," and "City of Blinding Lights"--and its low points--"Yahweh.&quo
t; But there are far more high points than low points and after the opposite being true of "Zooropa" and "Pop" this is one U2 fan who is greatful that U2 came back 4 years ago, and has stuck around again for another go around. Give this album a few years and will be saying that it stacks up with the best of the best U2 albums. And who cares if you think it sucks---at least it gets them out on tour, and thats all that matters!

    Better than the last one

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Nov 23, 2004 | 4 out of 4 found this How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb review helpful

Pros: a few tracks qualify as U2 classics

    Cons: a few misfires

I was a bit disappointed with "All You Cant Leave..." There were 3 or 4 tracks I really liked on that cd and Beautiful Day is still one of my all time favorites...but several of the tracks on that cd are hookless and forgettable. So I loo...ked forward to this new cd with caution and a bit of skepticism. After listening to it several times...Im MUCH happier with this collection of songs. These songs do a much better job of sucking you in melodically and emotionally. Vertigo is perhaps the weakest track (well...its actually tied with Love and Peace or Else) and it may just be because with all the TV exposure, the song has just grown tiresome and irritating. But, I swear, some of these tracks soar higher than anything they have ever done. "Crumbs from Your Table" is a wonderful song that showcases everything that U2 is known for doing well. Great hook...angelic guitars...honest sing along lyrics. Then the track is followed by "One Step Closer"...probably the best song, next to "one" that U2 has ever written. It is soulful, sad, and somehow full of joy all at once. It would be a great song to listen to while youre about to blow a fuse in traffic...because it will make you all of a sudden feel really stupid for getting angry...and you may end up with sort of a smile instead. I know...Im being cheesy...but so what. Some writers criticize the band for not being more adventurous on this album. But..if U2 decided to experiment and be risky, these same critics would criticize them for not being themselves...blah blah blah. Some have also complained about Bonos weakening vocals. Yes..he is showing a bit of wear and tear on the vocal cords. A couple of the missed higher notes on the album made me wince and wonder why they havent heard of a "do over". Its a minor complaint. Bono still sings like he means it. And this fan thanks u2 for another collection of songs that will make my time here on earth just a bit brighter. Read more Less

    U2 HAS CREATED ANOTHER CLASSIC

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Nov 24, 2004 | 3 out of 4 found this How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb review helpful

Pros: Great guitar, bass, production, and songs

Cons: Some of the other inaccurate reviews

This CD rocks, U2 style. They have created another classic that blends elements from all phases of their career. The guitar and bass are especially prominent on this release, and it sounds great. I don't know how anyone could give a negative revi...ew. Just because it will sell millions doesn't mean that the music is commercial or that U2 played it safe. There are some excellent songs here, at times very creative.U2 continues to evolve and amaze. Buy it and give a few listens, then decide for yourself. Simply the best rock band we have, if quality is what we measure by. Key tracks : Vertigo, Love and Peace or Else, All Because of You, Crumbs From Your Table, Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own. Read more Less

    Keep it simple next time

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Nov 25, 2004 | 1 out of 1 found this How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb review helpful

Pros: Simple and rocking sounds. Plus this album can be played live.

Cons: Fear of failure (which U2 has never been). There is no chaos (just like ATYCLB).

Good, solid album. They're rocking straight forward and can't wait till I hear these songs live. Some great tunes, yet wish they go back to exploring new sounds and kicking rocks butt again. Some of these songs are great, yet they need more c...haos throughout the album, because it becomes stagnant. Read more Less

    One listen not enough

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Nov 22, 2004 | 1 out of 1 found this How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb review helpful

Pros: deep lyrics, more edge guitar than in a decade

Cons: not the classic that Achtung or Joshua Tree were

I've read how U2 have lost their touch and stopped taking risks. I don't buy it. I think that it's a great risk to go back to the basics when everyone else seems to be trying the same new thing (this alt. rock sound that's out now) ...unsuccessfully. Stripped down U2 is not the U2 of the mid '80's or early '90's, but given a few listens and one will realize the depth of a lot of the lyrics. One will also see that the edge is ready to take his title back of ultimate guitar innovator... how many guitarists can come up with such simple, yet great sounding hooks, ones that make you wonder why nobody had come up with them before? In the end their records are prepping us for another concert experience and I can already see how great these songs are gonna sound in concert. Peolpe seem to forget how difficult it is to make good music after 25 years. Ask the Stones... they haven't had a really good album since maybe Tattoo you, less then 20 years after their conception. Name one other band that can put together as good an album as U2 has with this one 25 years after their start. YOU WON'T FIND ONE. A perfect CD... hardly. But it's pretty darn good!!! Long live and Rock U2!!! Read more Less

U2 have killed themselves since 2000

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Nov 11, 2004 | 10 out of 20 found this How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb review helpful

Pros: "The new U2 album !!!"... is that enough for a good album ?... by no means

Cons: comercial, false, cheap, unnecesary, silly, lazy, flat, basic, poor, cliche, dumb, tuneless, pompous, crappy, boring, dissapointing.

U2 used to be the boss band on earth, U2 was the band that marked the musical tendencies to follow by otherbands, as far as music, as live performances, as how to look, etc.But after Pop the band finally sold to the easy adolescent market forever. AT...YCLB was an enormous success of sales, but such a terrible album, without sense as a real worth and new disc.U2 in the 80 was the most respected band of the planet, and their music was absolutely away of hard rock and glam rock of those years. They became the best band, while all the other groups wasted timesaying that they will be the best ones using stupid and infantile melodies. In the 90 U2 was the band that couldbreak whenever they wanted the musical tendencies, and the 3 discs published in that decade were amazing, different and irresistible. Now in 2000 U2 is not more than the memory of that excellent band, they are the most boring old men of the rock treating again to copy such magic timeless music like Joshua Tree or Acthung Baby, but they have failedirremediably in their attempt, being now only one stupid parodia from which they got to be. They have spent 7 years from the last time they made music and the world respected them. Now the musical sense ofexpectancy is only so that it is "the new U2 album", but not so that it is the best album, only by the registered tradename "U2".Bono sings like an older and older man, with a hoarse and rough voice, and gets to be ridiculous the attempt to reach at the higher notes that he reached inUnforgettable Fire or Joshua Tree. The most creative member of the group, The Edge, has died like musician, and he always uses the same guitars , without no innovation nor creativity. The production is horrible, absolutely commercial songs without any sense, the cover of the album is the worst of the U2 history . They spent more than 2 years in making this product for adolescents, loaded ofmusical cliches, and they only leave a deep dislike for those we were surprised with Zooropa, Pop, Unforgettable Fire. This album is nothing new, is the same ATYCLB way. For sure U2 will sell millions of copies with this, but after 20 years the people still will be listening and loving Pride ( in the name of love ), Stay, One, Bad, Sunday Bloody Sunday, All I Want Is You, Angel Of Harlem, Staring At The Sun, Please, The First Time, The Fly, Running To Stand Still, With Or Without you, etc, but they will forget all their comercial hypes since 2000.Dream Is Over ( John Lennon, 1970 ). This "bomb" isn't quite explosive.

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Oct 17, 2006

Pros: A U2 album always delivers the goods, even if flawed.

Cons: Aside from a couple standouts, U2 sound like they're on cruise control.

Given the dreck radio often subjects us to, it's easy to overrate U2's "How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb." The superlative praises by professional critics raise this CD to a standard it simply does not meet. Face it: this is a DECENT..., but not great, U2 album. It has its share of filler, and it covers well-worn territory (spirituality, war, death, and so forth) but with slightly less satisfying results. That said, "Bomb" rocks when Bono, the Edge, Mullen, and Clayton put their minds to it. The kickoff upbeat single, "Vertigo," is the strongest track and it projects with full force, while the lovely "A Man and a Woman" and the memorable "Yahweh" make strong impressions. It's brief running time of 49 minutes is welcome in an age where lesser artists feel the need to pack in as much material into an 80 minute album as possible. Thankfully, this band realizes that less can mean more. U2 really haven't turned the page on this new album, nor have they revealed anything particularly new. Still, this is a flawed but solid offering that may not win over any new converts, but it won't discourage the faithful, either. Grade: B-. Read more Less
