Hollywood's most celebrated luminaries--behind the camera as well as in front of it--combined talents to present this epic tale of the development of the American West from the 1830s through the Civil War to the end of the century, as seen through the eyes of one pioneer family. The film, divided into three chapters--"The Civil War" (directed by John Ford), "The Railroad" (directed by George Marshall), and "The River, the Plains, the Outlaws" (directed by Henry Hathaway)--tells the story of the Prescotts, a spirited group of easterners who make a declaration to migrate west. When their parents are lost in a tragic river accident, Eve (Carroll Baker) and Lilith (Debbie Reynolds) go their separate ways. Eve remains on the land that took her parents, settling down with the well-intentioned Linus Rawlings (James Stewart), while Lilith becomes a singer who is courted by the conniving Cleve Van Valen (Gregory Peck) when he learns that she has inherited a fortune in California. As time passes and the Civil War takes the life of Linus, the newest generation of Prescott offspring struggles with even greater danger and loss, in the form of fierce Indians as well as family archrivals. Top-notch production values and an endless string of solid performances have earned HOW THE WEST WAS WON the well-deserved label as one of Hollywood's most revered classics.

I first viewed this as a child around 4 years old.It has remained my favorite movie ever since. It is a must see movie with a sweeping soundtrack to match ( a must buy soundtrack on CD)The cast is all star.Debbie Reynolds,Jimmy Stewart,John Wayne,Carr...ol Baker,Gregory Peck,if they were stars they were in this movie. It follows three generations of one family as they face happiness and hardship to settle in the American frontier. From one side of the country to the other the events along the way shape the land and their lives. From wagon trains, the Civil War etc you will find action, love, and fun for the whole family. This is a family movie and it is a bit long so start watching early.Dont miss out on a great movie. HOW THE WEST WAS WON

"How the West Was Won" was filmed in the three camera technique for use on wide Cinerama theatre screens. So when viewed on the small home screen, one can't help but notice three sections of hue variations and occasional fine vertical pale lines whe...re the film matches up amid some minor distortion. But, these minor flaws quickly go unnoticed as the story unfolds and the viewer becomes ingrossed in this epic Western tale. This is a wonderful film about the trials and tribulations a family making their way West by water, woods, mountains and across the great American plains. Rafting in rapids, maurading Indians, a realistic railroad derailment, cowboys, outlaws, and spectacular visulal effects supported by an outstanding all star cast make this one of the best Americana films of all time.David R.
