Other than one unfortunate set in 1975 (which was both quite commercial and rather confused), altoist Herb Geller did not record as a leader during 1960-83. However, he worked steadily in Germany for decades and continued to improve as a player (even though the jazz world temporarily forgot about him). For his first set after all of that time, Geller is heard live with a German rhythm section (pianist Hartmut Sperl, bassist Bernd Wolf and drummer Achim Brauer) performing five bebop standards, plus Antonio Carlos Jobim's "Triste." The altoist sounds enthusiastic and consistently creative during this somewhat rare but recommended European album.
