    Listen more than once!

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Mar 10, 2003 | 1 out of 1 found this Hootie & The Blowfish review helpful

As a die hard HBF fan, I was sceptical too after the first few clips I heard on Amazon.com, but when you finally put that cd on and the opening notes start for Deeper Side, you are completely hooked. this cd begs to be turned up loud with the window...s down..the most surprising song is "little brother" with its funk sound to it, but they boys pull it off very well..I challenge you to not sing the chorus all day, it sticks in your head! The Rain Song sounds like it could have been written by Hootie, and the added background vocals of the Continental Drifters Susan Cowsill and Vicki Peterson is only fitting. The hidden track "Alright" is pure HBF and could have come right off of Cracked Rear View, along with I'll Come Running and When She's Gone. All in all, the 4th release (or 5th if you count Scattered Smothered and Covered) by HBF is a gem and should not be overlooked, even by Hootie-skeptics. listen more than once, it will quickly become the one cd that stays in your player at all times. Classic Hootie at their best.

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Mar 16, 2003

If you're looking for a finely polished collection of guitar pop rock gems, the self-titled "Hootie and The Blowfish" album is for you. This album is perfect for both types of Hootie fans: those that liked "Cracked Rear View" but somewhat lost track ...of them over the years AND the die-hard Hootie fans that have stuck with them through thick and thin. Its been nearly 5 years since we've heard something new from the South Carolina rockers; "Musical Chairs," the bands last true studio album, was released in 1998 (although a b-sides/rarities album entitled "Scattered, Smothered, and Covered" was released in 2001). The time off has served the band well. After taking a few years off to start families and work on other projects, the band hit the studio with the highly renowned producer Don Was.The album kicks-off with 'Deeper Side,' a mid-tempo rocker that could have fit easily on "Cracked Rear View" or "Musical Chairs." From this point on, the album swirls through more rockers and a sprinkling of ballads to form a classic rock and roll album. The first single 'Innocence' is at the top end of the album and finds the band in familiar Hootie territory. 'Space' is destined to be a Hootie classic - a concise, well crafted pop tune with edgy guitars. 'I'll Come Running' is a fantastic upbeat song inspired by our US armed forces leaving home for the Middle East. 'Tears Fall Down,' 'When She's Gone,' and 'Woody' are all powerful ballads, with 'Woody' particulary shining. 'Little Darlin' is an extremely well produced quirky country/rock-a-billy song. Perhaps the best thing about "Hootie and the Blowfish" are the suprises we find throughout listening. The second track, the R&B flavored 'Little Brother,' finds Darius Rucker's vocals more soulful than ever (this song could be a sleeper single). The next suprise is a great cover of the Continital Drifters 'The Rain Song,' which features 2 of the Drifters on backing vocals. The best suprise, in my opinion, is the final track 'Go and Tell Him (Soup Song).' This song is by far the most rocking funky thing Hootie has ever done. Think Black Crowes with a little soul added in. To top off a great list of songs and pleasent suprises, after a 90 second pause at the end of the record comes the hidden track 'Alright' (which many argue could have single potential even as a secret/hidden/extra track).Take a chance on this record -- it could be the ultimate summer time, car windows down, sing-along record. Hootie rocks! This album takes Cracked Rear View and mixes it with all of their other influences and albums, so at the end, it's a much more refined, mature sound! The first single Innocence is Hootie at their best. "I'll Come Runnin'" is, again, clas...sic. And, "The Rain Song" sounds so good! :-) Check out this album. You won't be sorry, and you'll see why America needs to appreciate these guys all over again. Quality CD for true Hootie Fans

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Mar 9, 2003

First lets be realistic. Hootie will never have the mass appeal of "Cracked Rear View" again. However, they still are making quality music. Besides the great song "Innocence", other highlights can be found in "When She's Gone" and "I'll Come Runni...ng." These songs are reach backs to the hits of their debut album. Other songs provide example of an growing band. Hence, for those of you in have loved Hootie in the past this is for you. Read more Less

I think this cd is a little more grown up and not so bubblegum like the last one they put out.
it about being broken hearted.could be better.

    A good listen

The nice thing about Hootie is that they don't sway too much from their roots. These are the type of songs that keep fans coming back for more.

    Scab Replacements

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Mar 6, 2003

I once heard a DJ back in 1995 say this about Hootie & The Blowfish just before the baseball strike was settled and it looked like baseball would use minor leaguers and cast-offs to play the season. "If Rock & Roll ever went on strike, Hootie & The ...Blowfish would be the replacement players." I just loved the way that Baby Boomers would go around saying, "Yes, I love alternative rock. Hootie & The Blowfish are GREAT!!!" Morons...... Read more Less

    A little slow

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Mar 5, 2003

Just bought the cd today and a little disappointed so-far. That may change after a few listens but I don't expect it to. I agree with jballard30 in that it is slow and lacks energy and as stated earlier it may get better after a few more listens.I l...oved the first 3 CD's. I didn't bother with 'Scattered...' (didn't really care for the originals). After waiting almost 5 full years for original material so far the disc has been a disappointment. Read more Less
