It's hard to believe that Ronnie James Dio has been in numerous bands since the late 1950's, even longer than Ozzy Osbourne, His first professional band is Elf, they're very good but unfortunately, their stuff is very hard to find and Elf definitly d...eserves more attention, Dio's next band is Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow, Dio's first taste of success with songs like Man on the Silver Mountain, Stargazer, Long Live Rock 'n' Roll and Kill the King. Then his next task is to replace Ozzy Osbourne in Black Sabbath, even though he wasn't Black Sabbath material (no offense to Dio), it just wasn't the same without ozzy, but they made great cuts like Neon Knights, Heaven and Hell, The Mob Rules, Turn up the Night and Sign of the Southern Cross. Then finally his own band DIO, his first album HOLY DIVER, which has killer tunes like Rainbow in the Dark, Don't Talk to Strangers, Stand up and Shout, the underrated Shame on the Night and the title track, The other songs kick ass as well, if you want to own a classic metal album, Get Holy Diver, if you've heard of this album, then you must not be a metal fan. Pro Reviews: Holy Diver

  • All Music Guide

After participating in five classic studio albums (three with Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow and two with Black Sabbath) in the late '70s and early '80s, it seemed that singer Ronnie James Dio could do no wrong. And with the release of his self-monickered band's debut album, Holy Diver, in 1983, Dio struck gold once again by injecting catchy melodies into the classic metal riffery of his previous groups. Besides Dio's inspired songwriting, the album's consistency owes a lot to his carefully chosen bandmates, including veteran bassist Jimmy Bain and drummer Vinny Appice, and a phenomenal find in young guitarist Vivian Campbell, whose creativity and technique are quite astounding. The album opens in full-tilt metal mode with the frenetic "Stand Up and Shout," which segues into the epic title track, an album highlight thanks to it's hypnotic, mid-paced riff. Dio himself plays keyboards (badly) on the hit single "Rainbow in the Dark," and the remaining cuts range from further stabs at pop-met...al ("Gypsy," "Caught in the Middle") to blatant metal anthems ("Straight Through the Heart," "Invisible"). These two facets find a perfect balance on the excellent "Don't Talk to Strangers," arguably the album's high point. - Ed Rivadavia, All Music Guide Read more Less

Biography

Dio

For a brief spell during the mid-'80s, the heavy metal quintet Dio was one of the top U.S. concert attractions, boasting one of the most over-the-top stage acts of its time loaded with props and special effects (lasers, explosions, a giant dragon, etc.). The group's leader was singer Ronnie James Dio, who had previously become acquainted with the metal masses as the fro... Read more
