As a professional hit man, you take on four missions with the sole purpose of eliminating a target at each location. In ~Hong Kong, you must dispatch Lee Hong, leader of the deadly ~Red Dragon Triad, and you'll travel to the rainforests of ~Colombia to track down a notorious drug lord. A Russian gunrunner awaits his fate at your hands as he plans to sell nuclear weapons on the black market in ~Rotterdam, ~The Netherlands, while in ~Budapest, ~Hungary, the Austrian terrorist Franz Fuchs is determined to destroy a scheduled peace summit with a deadly bomb.

In Hitman: Codename 47, you must carefully orchestrate equal parts of stealth, planning, tactics and strategy. With each success, a larger arsenal of black-market weapons and equipment becomes available. Although each mission's ultimate goal is a kill, much of the gameplay is devoted to surveillance, problem solving and planning for multiple contingencies. The game features nine specific training tutorials dealing with movement, dressing, multiple actions, elevator use, and five types of weapon usage.

While both first- and third-person viewpoints are employed during gameplay, the majority is played in the latter mode with the former limited to sniper rifle and binocular use. Your role as an expert assassin is further complicated by his disturbing past and moral dilemmas as the protagonist considers his choice of profession and searches for self-understanding (or is it self-loathing?).

An onscreen display tracks and monitors health, ammunition, armor, inventory items, and includes a compass for orientation purposes. Weapons range from handguns to knives to sub-machine guns. Other features include adjustable sound effects, speech, and music volume, customizable keyboard and mouse configurations, graphics options (resolution, color depth, shadows, textures, anisotropic filtering, screen size) and character naming. ~ Michael L.
