I like "Hit Somebody" very much. It's very well put together and recorded; WZ's voice is in top form; his son Jordan sings harmony. The tune is funny and a little sad-poor Buddy! Maybe I'm taking things too seriously but I never could stand to watch ...the players fight. Paul Shaffer's Hammond B-3 organ playing lifts the song a little higher all around.Track #2: "For my Next Trick I'll Need a Volunteer" is off his 2000 album: "Life'll Kill Ya". Great songwriting. More funny and sad. Is there a theme here? Read more Less

Pro Reviews: Hit Somebody (The Hockey Song)

  • All Music Guide

"Hit Somebody (The Hockey Song)" has several factors of note. It is co-written by sportswriter and -Tuesdays With Morrie author Mitch Albom. With two such sharp wits and wordsmiths, you can reasonably expect it to be a wry, literate tune, which it is. It also features backing by The Late Show's CBS Orchestra (formerly the World's Most Dangerous Band), anchored, of course, by Paul Shaffer. He brings along documented Warren Zevon fan David Letterman (or at least a David Letterman sample) to provide the song's tagline. With that information, one could make the reasonable assumption that it's silly and novelty-ish, which is also true. It's not, however, particularly funny, and never quite manages enough sincerity to make it entertaining for more than a single listen. The flipside (from his Artemis debut, Life'll Kill Ya), on the other hand, is considerably more inviting. Despite its goofy title, "For My Next Trick I'll Need a Volunteer" is actually one of Zevon's characteristically sardoni...c examinations of life and love, with a secretly deep-felt poignancy that sneaks up on you and doesn't let go. - Stanton Swihart, All Music Guide Read more Less

Biography

Warren Zevon

One of the most acute and savagely satiric songwriters of his era, Warren Zevon was born in Chicago on January 24, 1947. His formative years were as colorful as the scenarios played out in his music: his father was a professional gambler, a lifestyle which forced the family to move frequently, and Zevon spent most of his formative years in California and Arizona. He lea... Read more
