| EXPERT RATING: From AMG Reviews Released as a companion piece to the hits collection Natural History, History Revisited compiles mainly new remixes of the band's best-known, pre-experimental output. Only the dub mix of "Happiness Is Easy" had been released before -- the rest were done without the band's involvement, and the band reportedly tried to block the album's release. Talk Talk's brand of synth-pop lends itself quite well to this sort of treatment, so the collection works quite well, although there aren't many surprises. Pros: It's Talk Talk, underneath it all
Cons: Revisionism obscures Truth
Maybe it's unfair to rate an album on the basis of one song, but I heard enough to blurt out this--"Don't change a thing!" However, I'm referring to the original. When you tamper with a masterpiece, almost always the result is a subtraction from the original. I only heard the "Happiness is Easy" remix. The original is a great song in its virgin form. I assume the artist must've felt it was complete or they wouldn't have released it. It doesn't need a reworking. In this case, the sense of the song is lost in the remix. The vocals and lyrics are obscured, and the spare but poignant natural rhythm of the original is overlaid with some rather uninteresting techno loop. Ketchup on filet mignon, I say! Ice cubes in the Cabernet! No, thank you.
Buy "The Colour of Spring" and enjoy a great album that needs no further embellishment or tampering. ...
