Historic Time Travel - Wars of the World (2005)

With the creation of the atomic bomb, the face of war was permanently altered. This collection of vintage films from the 1940s and 1950s explores the many ways in which the development of nuclear weapons affected military history throughout the 20th century. Produced by the US War Department, Jam Handy Productions, and Warner News, the black and white films here include "Operation Crossroads," "A Tale of Two Cities," and "News Magazines of the Screen, March." The first film acts as a record of the atomic bomb tests held at Bikini Island in the Pacific, which included underwater and above-ground explosions. Viewers are also offered a disturbing glimpse of how animals like goats and pigs were damaged by the effects of radiation. The second film explores the devastating affects of the atomic bomb droppings on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945. The last film explores the forming of the United Nations, and the methods that the US government turned to as an alternative to using nuclear weaponry.
